Daily Telegraph Editor Ben English says the Royal Commission will restore a “degree of honour and dignity” to the memory of fallen soldiers who died on Australian shores. On Monday the veteran community welcomed the federal government’s decision to announce a Royal Commission to address elevated suicide rates among Australian soldiers. The Daily Telegraph has been pushing for a Royal Commission into veteran suicide through their ‘Save Our Heroes’ campaign. Following the decision Mr English told Sky News elevated suicide rates among former soldiers were “a national disgrace, a national shame”. He said there were more soldiers who had died on Australian shores due to suicide after returning from Afghanistan than those killed on the battlefield. Mr English also celebrated the appointment of Peter Dutton to the defence portfolio saying Australia “now has a defence minister who is on the side of the soldier”.
